Peter, tan oak is in fact a tree native to the Pacific Northwest. In frontier days it was one of the most abundant and was widely used in building what were called corduroy roads. After felling the trees and stripping off the branches, the logs were laid side by side like straws. This was done because the area is so wet making roads impassible much of the time; therefore, the tan oak roads. The roads took there toll and the tan oak has only recently come back to some abundance.

I love the site and am delighted that you sent the link to me. After my visit to Montana, I showed my photos to Coley, my personal family wood-worker. He is quite the snob about tools, but admitted that you, in fact, have an impressive lathe. This is a very rare and important compliment from him. Personally, I just loved visiting with you and Jane and seeing your shop. OK, so one question: Isn't there a corgi in your life? Doesn't she deserve a job with pay and pension?

I think you should take that chain off of that dead bear in the photo titled "Red Gum Root". What are you doing with a dead bear? Other than that everything looks great. You might want to change your assistants if they had anything to do with bear.
