Black ash burl is very dense and wet when freshly cut. After turning this 12″ hollow form, it has taken three months for this is dry. The frost checks / cracks you see in the photograph are a normal occurrence for black ash, as the tree grow in areas with extremely cold temperatures. The frost checks make for interesting pieces, but destroy much, if any, value for the lumber.
